As qualitative researchers incorporate computer assistance into their analytic approaches, important questions arise about the adoption of new technology. Is it worth learning computer-assisted methods? Will the pay-off be sufficient to justify the investment? Which programs are worth learning? What are the effects on the analysis process? This book complements the existing literature by giving a detailed account of the use of four major programs in analyzing the same data. Priority is given to the tasks of qualitative analysis rather than to program capability and the programs are treated as tools rather than as a discipline to be acquired. The key is not what the programs allow researcher to do, but whether the tasks that researchers need to undertake are facilitated by the software. Thus the study develops a user-centred approach to the adoption of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. The author emphasises qualitative analysis as a creative craft, but one which must increasingly be subject to rigorous methodological scrutiny. The adoption of computer-aided methods offers opportunities, but also dangers and ultimately this book is about the scientific qualitative research. Written in a distinctive and succinct style, this book will be valuable to social science researchers and students interested in qualitative research and in the potential for computer-assisted analysis.

High technology industries are in desperate need for adequate tools to assess the validity of simulations produced by ever faster computers for perennial unstable problems. In order to meet these industrial expectations, applied mathematicians are facing a formidable challenge summarized by these words — nonlinearity and coupling. This book is unique as it proposes truly original solutions: (1) Using hypercomputation in quadratic algebras, as opposed to the traditional use of linear vector spaces in the 20th century; (2) complementing the classical linear logic by the complex logic which expresses the creative potential of the complex plane. The book illustrates how qualitative computing has been the driving force behind the evolution of mathematics since Pythagoras presented the first incompleteness result about the irrationality of √2. The celebrated results of Gödel and Turing are but modern versions of the same idea: the classical logic of Aristotle is too limited to capture the dynamics of nonlinear computation. Mathematics provides us with the missing tool, the organic logic, which is aptly tailored to model the dynamics of nonlinearity. This logic will be the core of the “Mathematics for Life” to be developed during this century.

This is a comprehensive assessment of recent developments in the use of computers in qualitative research, an increasingly important and rapidly growing area of interest among social scientists and graduate students. Using Computers in Qualitative Research profiles and compares the principal programs available, identifying their particular strengths and limitations. It outlines the sorts of research problems that existing and forthcoming software can and cannot handle. The contributors also draw on their experiences of teaching computer-based techniques to suggest ways in which these could be incorporated into research methods training. Finite precision computations are at the heart of the daily activities of many engineers and researchers in all branches of applied mathematics. Written in an informal style, the book combines techniques from engineering and mathematics to describe the rigorous and novel theory of computability in finite precision. In the challenging cases of nonlinear problems, theoretical analysis is supplemented by software tools to explore the stability on the computer.
