The magical difference between food prepared in a restaurant and that in a home kitchen for family and friends, is a little ingredient called love. And love is most evident in what is essentially Cariema Isaacs’s tribute to her late father as she shares their mutual passion for food and cooking, as well as their Cape Malay heritage. My Cape Malay Kitchen is a breathtakingly beautiful presentation of some 80 traditional Cape Malay recipes as well as a selection of modern dishes. These are accompanied by Cariema’s depiction of her childhood growing up in Bo-Kaap – the Cape Malay Quarter of Cape Town. She includes the religious and cultural ceremonies, as well as events that have shaped the Cape Malay community into the unique community it is today. But My Cape Malay Kitchen is still a cookbook, packed with flavourful food, richly spiced curries, indulgent cakes and decadent desserts, all illustrated with truly inspirational photography.

This book is a short collection of memories about being white and living in South Africa during Apartheid. I wrote this book for the reader to easily understand what it was like to live in this environment. It is not a history lesson, but some personal experiences that I went through living in South Africa at the time. Living through apartheid I never even realized that it even existed, because we were brought up to believe that it was normal. Life was paradise for me and hell for others! Many of us did not know or care, and even if we did try to change the system, it would have resulted in prison or death. We believed that changing apartheid would have caused the country to fall into the hands of the communists, and many white people were fearful that black rule would have destroyed South Africa and their lives. The other side of the coin is that I can’t comprehend what the lives of most blacks was like, which was excruciatingly difficult, something that I didn‘t personally experience. Our history books never taught us anything good about blacks. I can’t remember ever learning anything positive that blacks did. What I did learn was that they were lazy, uneducated, dangerous, and drank a lot. “Stay away from them, and if they bother you call the police.” There were serious injustices in South Africa, and many black people suffered under the Apartheid Regime.

Kitchen Confidential reveals what Bourdain calls "twenty-five years of sex, drugs, bad behavior and haute cuisine." Last summer, The New Yorker published Chef Bourdain's shocking, "Don't Eat Before Reading This." Bourdain spared no one's appetite when he told all about what happens behind the kitchen door. Bourdain uses the same "take-no-prisoners" attitude in his deliciously funny and shockingly delectable book, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike. From Bourdain's first oyster in the Gironde, to his lowly position as dishwasher in a honky tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown (where he witnesses for the first time the real delights of being a chef); from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, to drug dealers in the east village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain's tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable. Kitchen Confidential will make your mouth water while your belly aches with laughter. You'll beg the chef for more, please.
