In the last decade the development and control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has attracted a lot of interest. Both researchers and companies have a growing interest in improving this type of vehicle given their many civilian and military applications. This book presents the state of the art in the area of UAV Flight Formation. The coordination and robust consensus approaches are presented in detail as well as formation flight control strategies which are validated in experimental platforms. A novel methodology is presented for organizing swarms of robots into a formation utilizing artificial potential fields generated from normal and sigmoid functions. These functions construct the surface which swarm members travel on, controlling the overall swarm geometry and the individual member spacing. Nonlinear limiting functions are defined to provide tighter swarm control by modifying and adjusting a set of control variables forcing the swarm to behave according to set constraints, formation and member spacing. The swarm function and limiting functions are combined to control swarm formation, orientation, and swarm movement as a whole. Parameters are chosen based on desired formation as well as user defined constraints. This approach compared to others, is simple, computationally efficient, scales well to different swarm sizes, to heterogeneous systems, and to both centralized and decentralized swarm models. Simulation results are presented for a swarm of four and ten particles following circle, ellipse and wedge formations. Experimental results are also included with a swarm of four unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) as well as UGV swarm and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) coordination.

Space agencies are now realizing that much of what has previously been achieved using hugely complex and costly single platform projects—large unmanned and manned satellites (including the present International Space Station)—can be replaced by a number of smaller satellites networked together. The key challenge of this approach, namely ensuring the proper formation flying of multiple craft, is the topic of this second volume in Elsevier’s Astrodynamics Series, Spacecraft Formation Flying: Dynamics, control and navigation. In this unique text, authors Alfriend et al. provide a coherent discussion of spacecraft relative motion, both in the unperturbed and perturbed settings, explain the main control approaches for regulating relative satellite dynamics, using both impulsive and continuous maneuvers, and present the main constituents required for relative navigation. The early chapters provide a foundation upon which later discussions are built, making this a complete, standalone offering. Intended for graduate students, professors and academic researchers in the fields of aerospace and mechanical engineering, mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics, Spacecraft Formation Flying is a technical yet accessible, forward-thinking guide to this critical area of astrodynamics. The first book dedicated to spacecraft formation flying, written by leading researchers and professors in the field Develops the theory from an astrodynamical viewpoint, emphasizing modeling, control and navigation of formation flying satellites on Earth orbits Examples used to illustrate the main developments, with a sample simulation of a formation flying mission included to illustrate high fidelity modeling, control and relative navigation

The main objective of this project was to provide a flight demonstration of formation control using UAV research aircraft models. This document will describe the efforts leading to the design, construction, and flight testing of formation control laws using three YF-22 research UAVs designed, built, and instrumented at West Virginia University (WVU). In the selected formation configuration, a radio control (R/C) pilot maintains ground control of the 'leader' aircraft while two autonomous 'follower' aircraft are required to maintain a pre-defined position and orientation with respect to the 'leader' aircraft. The report is organized as follows. First, a description of the aircraft test-bed construction and on-board payload systems will be provided. The following sections will describe the overall design of the formation control laws. Specifically, this design was based on a set of inner and outer loop control laws using a NLDI (non Linear Dynamic Inversion) approach. The implementation of the controller design featured a mathematical model obtained directly from flight data through a PID (Parameter Identification) study. Additional sections will provide a description of the on-board flight control software and simulation work prior to the flight testing activities. A final section will describe the results from an extensive flight testing program. The flight testing activities were articulated in several flight testing of 2-aircraft and 3-aircraft formations.

In this thesis, the synchronized position tracking controller is incorporated in formation flight control for multiple flying wing UAVs. With this technology, the performance and effectiveness of the formation controller are improved when the virtual structure approach is utilized to maintain formation geometry. Simulations are conducted on the nonlinear model of two flying wings to verify the proposed controller. Implementation on the actual flying wings prototype system using a GumStix computer enable real flight test scenarios to be conducted for verifying the designed formation controller autonomously. Results from the actual experiments confirm the performance improvements of the formation controller when the motion synchronization control technique is incorporated.

Unmanned Rotorcraft Systems explores the research and development of fully-functional miniature UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) rotorcraft, and provides a complete treatment of the design of autonomous miniature rotorcraft UAVs. The unmanned system is an integration of advanced technologies developed in communications, computing, and control areas, and is an excellent testing ground for trialing and implementing modern control techniques. Included are detailed expositions of systematic hardware construction, software systems integration, aerodynamic modeling; and automatic flight control system design. Emphasis is placed on the cooperative control and flight formation of multiple UAVs, vision-based ground target tracking, and landing on moving platforms. Other issues such as the development of GPS-less indoor micro aerial vehicles and vision-based navigation are also discussed in depth: utilizing the vision-based system for accomplishing ground target tracking, attacking and landing, cooperative control and flight formation of multiple unmanned rotorcraft; and future research directions on the related areas.
